Dear Vaughan Perks

Freedom of Information Act 2000 - Request for Information (FOI_677484)

I am writing in respect of your recent enquiry for information held by the
Council under the Freedom of Information Act.

Please find your response below:

1. What support does your local authority offer to grandparents providing
informal childcare for their grandchildren?

• Please provide key contact and addresses of services

Family Information Service

Wesley House, 2nd floor, 19 Chapel Street, Luton, LU1 2SE

Tel 01582 54 88 88

Web: [1]www.luton.gov.uk/fis

Email: [2][email address]

The Family Information Service provide advice on childcare, activities and
support organisations within the Borough for all families and carers.

If we find out that a grandparent is receiving payment of any kind for
providing childcare to their relatives then we also inform them that they
must register as Childminder.  In this instance we refer them to Luton
Borough Council’s Childcare Advice and Support Team who can provide them
with the relevant training and support.  This also enables the child’s
parents to claim any childcare related benefits that they may be entitled
to.

• Please give information on any outreach or specially designed material
for informal childcaring grandparents

We do not have literature or provide outreach which is specifically
targeted at grandparents, however we attend many events in Luton which
often have grandparents, with their grandchildren, in attendance.

• Please give information on the number of queries you have from informal
childcaring grandparents seeking support or information

The following table gives information about the number of enquiries the
Family Information Service has received where the requestor has made it
clear that they are the child’s grandparent.  However, we do not
specifically ask the question of the requestor unless it is relevant to
their enquiry so there may be more users of the FIS who are grandparents.

The data represents calendar years so the 2012 data is from the 1^st
January to the 31^st October.

Year Enquiries % of all
-Grandparents enquiries
2010 19 0.53%
2011 16 0.45%
2012 11 0.43%
Totals 46 0.47%

If you are unhappy with our response, please write to Tracy Collins,
Complaints & Representations Manager, Luton Borough Council, Children &
Learning Department, Wesley House, 2^ND Floor, 19 Chapel Street, Luton
Beds, LU1 2SE.

If you remain unhappy after the conclusion of the Council’s internal
complaints procedure, you may apply to the Information Commissioner
