Dear JJ Evans
Re: Information request
Thank you for your request dated 21st October 2018 for information from NHS Blood
and Transplant (NHSBT) regarding the Infected Blood Inquiry.
I am writing to advise you that we are able to provide you with the following
information in response to your request.
Under FOI I am requesting the following information:
a) Have you received any notice or instruction not to destroy documentation or
files which may be relevant to the Infected Blood Inquiry from any source?
Yes
b) If so, from whom the notice was received and on what date it was received.
The Department of Health and Social Care wrote to our then Chief Executive Ian
Trenholm on 19th December 2017.
However, it should be noted that NHSBT and its predecessor organisation the
National Blood Authority already had an embargo on the destruction of records
relating to blood product traceability i.e. from the donor to the patient. This was put in
place by the then Medical Director, Dr Angela Robinson who was in post from 1994
until 2007.
The information supplied to you continues to be protected by the Copyright, Designs
and Patents Act 1988. You are free to use it for your own purposes, including any
non-commercial research you are doing and for the purposes of news reporting. Any
other re-use, for example commercial publication, would require the permission of the

Crown Copyright. You can find details on the arrangements for re-using Crown
Copyright on HMS Online at:

Information you receive which is not subject to Crown Copyright continues to be
protected by the copyright of the person, or organisation, from which the information
originated. You must ensure that you gain their permission before reproducing any
third party (non Crown Copyright) information.
I hope this is helpful in addressing your questions. Please quote the reference
number above in any future communications.
Yours sincerely
