Dear Oxford Cambridge and RSA Examinations,

Please would you indicate what steps, if any, you take to ensure that a candidate’s scripts are not marked or reviewed by a teacher from the candidate’s school, and that neither the marking nor review process is capable of being influenced by a teacher from the candidate’s school.

Yours faithfully,

A Tong

Dear Mr Tong

Thank you for your email.  To safeguard the integrity of our assessments
we provide examiners with training and guidance to make them aware of
their obligations in respect of conflicts of interest, such as in the
situation you describe in this information request.

Examiners are required to declare if they have, or have had in recent
years, a relationship with a centre (eg a school or college) preparing
their learners for an OCR assessment. They must also declare if they have
a relationship with a candidate entering for an OCR assessment.

They must declare such conflicts of interest each time they are invited to
undertake an assessment task and notify us if a conflict arises subsequent
to their acceptance of the invitation. In their declaration they must
explicitly state if they have, or have not, got a conflict of interest.
They also sign a terms and conditions agreement that reiterates and
reinforces their obligation to declare any conflicts of interest.

The vast majority of our examination scripts are marked on-screen, where
they are scanned and anonymised before they are accessed by the examiner.
On-screen marking also allows for the randomised allocation of examination
scripts to examiners.  This means that one centre’s cohort of students
will be marked by a number of examiners, rather than just one individual.
These procedures are in-line with the requirements of the qualifications
and examinations regulator.

If you are dissatisfied with the handling of your request, you can ask for
an internal review. Internal review requests should be submitted within
two months of the date of receipt of the response to your original request
and should be addressed to:
