Image sales

The request was successful.

Dear Royal Armouries,

Please could you tell me much profit, giving a year by year breakdown (after all expenses and associated costs are deducted) has the Royal Armouries (Leeds, London and Portsmouth) made from image sales for the past 10 years or as many as the service has been running for if less than 10 years.

Yours faithfully,

Cheryl Hall

Dear Ms Hall

Thank you for your request. We won't hold financial information for ten years but might be able to manage six years, plus the current year. We can make a rough estimate of staff costs, but we probably won't be able to make any other sensible deductions, such as office equipment, stationary etc, as that sort of information isn't held on a department by department basis.

If this is OK I shall ask our Finance Department to try and find the figures.

Dear Cheryl

Here are some figures for you:

LIBRARY INCOME

2007/8 41,625.92
2008/9 17,176.00
2009/10 17,712.80
2010/11 12,568.23
2011/12 27,577.01
2012/13 20,049.13
2013/14 8,234.43
144,943.52

I should like to clarify these by saying that:

1. No figures are available prior to 2007/8
2. The 2007/8 figures show the income for the whole of the Collections Department (not just the Library and Archives Department) and so is unrepresentative.
3. The figures for 2008/9 onwards include other income, such as photocopying, film licensing, but the majority is image sales and licensing.
4. The figures for 2011/12 and 2012/13 are inflated as a result of large contracts for new photography from two publishers.
5. The figure for 2013/14 is income to end of August 2013.
6. The Museum employs a full time Image Librarian who spends approximately half of his time on commercial sales and licensing. The deduction for this salary would be approximately £10,500. Other costs for consumables etc are not easily identifiable.

I hope this is of interest. If I can be of any further help please do not hesitate to contact me.
