Dear A M Geese,

Thank you for your request for information from the University of Dundee. The expenses claimed by Mr Houston can be found in a recent response by the University of Dundee to another applicant, available here http://www.whatdotheyknow.com/request/do... . Mr Houston was appointed to the Board of the Intellectual Assets Centre and subsequently the Chairmanship of that body with the knowledge and approval of the Principal. The commitment of Mr Houston to the I A Centre is two days per calendar month. I understand that Mr Houston receives a modest stipend from the I A Centre in his role and that any payments are managed by that body. Please treat this email a notice under S.17 of the Freedom of Information (Scotland) Act 2002 (FoI(S)A) that information concerning the stipend is not held by the University.

The Secretary of the University has confirmed that Mr Houston's involvement with the I A Centre is viewed as a positive contribution by the University to the research community in Scotland. As such, the University is prepared to meet the modest costs associated with Mr Houston's involvement with that body. As Mr Houston's activities for the I A Centre are sanctioned by the University they are conducted without prejudice to his status or benefits.

Concerning the two overnight stays in Glasgow:

22 May - Mr Houston was required to attend a dinner for the outgoing Chairman of the I A Centre and a board meeting was held in Glasgow the following day.

27 Sept - Mr Houston was attending a two-day event and combined his attendance with another commitment on behalf of the University in Glasgow.

The University wishes to make clear that Mr Houston did not entertain or offer any hospitality to any party on these trips. In respect of recorded information, the only claims made by Mr Houston to the University for those trips were for his own expenses. No charges for any third party were included in his claims. Please treat this email as notice under S.17 of FoI(S)A that this information is not held.

Yours sincerely,

Alan Bell
