I am looking for criminal records of Mr. John Francis Hodder, born in 1798 in Cork, Ireland. He probably killed a naval officer in around 1819.

Dear National Archives,

I am looking for criminal records of Mr. John Francis Hodder, born in 1798 in Cork, Ireland.

He probably killed a naval officer between 1814 and 1828 (Ireland separated from Britain in 1922) aboard a British official ship anchored in Bermuda in the Caribbean.

This man lived in Brazil from 1829 until 1889, when he passed away.

His story is very important to the history of Brazil.

I look forward to any historical information you may have about him.

Yours faithfully,

Paulo Henrique Colombo

RESO Records Enquiries, National Archives

Dear Paulo Henrique Colombo,
Thank you for contacting The National Archives of the United Kingdom.

I understand you may have already contacted us regarding your query.
Apologies for the delay in responding, I contacted our Naval specialist
who offered the below advice. Thank you for your patience.
I suggest you consult our guide to records of [1]Royal Navy operations and
correspondence 1669-1914. You could also try [2]Royal Navy commissioned
and warrant officers, for advice on how to search for them in
our [3]online catalogue, where all of our records are listed and
described. We also have a guide on [4]Royal Naval correspondence using the
ADM 12 indexes and digests. It will support you in finding letters
received by the Admiralty.

I have searched our catalogue for records using "Henry Keppel" as search
terms. You can view the results of the search [5]here and try some similar
searches yourself. I have tried a similar search with "John Francis
Hodder" but the results do not seem to be relevant to your enquiry.

All of our records are listed and described in our online catalogue. To
find records you need to [6]search our catalogue using dates and words
likely to match catalogue descriptions. Catalogue descriptions vary
hugely, from the very brief (sometimes just a word or two) to detailed
descriptions of multiple paragraphs and hundreds of words. Usually,
though, they are a line or two of text. A catalogue search does not search
the content of the record itself, only the description of the record
written for the catalogue. For more advice on searching effectively,
read [7]our catalogue help pages or our [8]blogs on using the catalogue.

If the record is held at The National Archives, the full description
(which you arrive at by clicking on its catalogue title) will indicate
your ordering and viewing options, including whether the record can be
seen online. Online records can be viewed and downloaded either directly
from the catalogue or from the websites of our commercial partners (there
will usually be a subscription cost to download the record from these
sites). Many of our records, however, are not viewable online and for
these you can order digital copies to be sent to you by clicking on the
'Request a copy' link contained within the catalogue description (you will
need to [9]register your details with us before you request copies).
You or somebody acting on your behalf, are welcome to [10]visit us to
search for records here in person, where you can view original records and
download online versions for free. We recommend that you [11]book a visit.
Please check our [12]news pages for the latest advice on our services and
see elsewhere on our website for our regular [13]opening times and advice
on [14]researching here. There is also more [15]advice on Freedom of
Information on our website.

The limitations on our resources mean we are unable to offer free research
but I hope the above advice will help you to search for records yourself.

I hope this helps.

Yours sincerely,
Chloe Lee
