Dear Paolo,
Thank you for your Freedom of Information (FOI) request received on the 2nd of
December 2024. Your request has been handled under the FOI Act 2000.
Your request for information was as follows:
I am looking for criminal records of Mr. John Francis Hodder, born in 1798 in Cork, Ireland.
He probably killed a naval officer in 1819.
This gentleman lived in Brazil from 1829 until 1889, when he passed away.
His story is very important to the history of Brazil.
I look forward to any historical information you may have about him.
Response
The Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) helps employers make safer recruitment
decisions each year by processing and issuing DBS checks for England, Wales, the
Channel Islands, and the Isle of Man. DBS also maintains the adults' and children's Barred
Lists and makes considered safeguarding decisions as to whether an individual should be
included on one or both lists and barred from engaging in regulated activity.
DBS does not hold any information within scope of your request.
DBS was created in 2012 under the provisions of the Protection of Freedoms Act 2012.
Prior to this, the Criminal Records Bureau (CRB), created in 2002, processed criminal
record checks under the provisions of the Police Act 1997.
DBS only has access to criminal record information upon receipt of an eligible DBS
application. This requires the applicant to be a living person to consent to the checks being
undertaken. DBS therefore holds no information about the individual in question.
To assist you, the National Archives are a non-ministerial department, and the official
archive and publisher for the UK Government, and for England and Wales, and may hold
historical records relating to courts and convictions from that time. Please see
Research
guides - The National Archives for further information.
The National Archives Ireland fulfills a similar function for Ireland
: The National Archives of
Ireland.
