How Will you retain stroke staff at Medway Maritime until the new HASUs open?

We're waiting for Save Our NHS in Kent Campaign Group to read a recent response and update the status.

Save Our NHS in Kent Campaign Group

Dear Medway NHS Foundation Trust,

Yesterday it was announced that the acute stroke unit at Tunbridge Wells Hospital will close within weeks due to low staffing levels. It has been admitted that the fact that the unit is earmarked for closure under the Kent and Medway Stroke Review plans is the main factor in staff levels dropping to a level where the unit can't be maintained.

In light of this, it is essential that Medway Trust and Kent and Medway STP take action to prevent this happening at the Medway Maritime hospital, which is also earmarked for closure and is therefore also at risk. The HASU units that are set to replace Medway's are not yet open, and will not open until spring 2020 at the earliest. Measures must be put in place to ensure that staff stay in post until that time.

1. What will Medway NHS Trust do to ensure that specialist stroke staff at Medway are motivated to stay in post?
Please list all the measures that will be undertaken.
2. Will pay be reviwed, and a retention premium be offered to specialist staff?
3. Will any other conditions be offered such as free parking or childcare assistance?

Yours faithfully,
Carly Jeffrey

Dear Carly Jeffrey,

Freedom of Information Request: reference 5573

Thank you for your recent request under the Freedom of Information Act
2000 please accept our sincere apologies for the delay in responding

The information you have requested is as follows:

Yesterday it was announced that the acute stroke unit at Tunbridge Wells
Hospital will close within weeks due to low staffing levels. It has been
admitted that the fact that the unit is earmarked for closure under the
Kent and Medway Stroke Review plans is the main factor in staff levels
dropping to a level where the unit can't be maintained.

In light of this, it is essential that Medway Trust and Kent and Medway
STP take action to prevent this happening at the Medway Maritime hospital,
which is also earmarked for closure and is therefore also at risk. The
HASU units that are set to replace Medway's are not yet open, and will not
open until spring 2020 at the earliest. Measures must be put in place to
ensure that staff stay in post until that time.

 1.  What will Medway NHS Trust do to ensure that specialist stroke staff
at Medway are motivated to stay in post?   Please list all the
measures that will be undertaken.

Medway NHS Foundation Trust do not currently have any issues with staffing
within our stroke service. The Trust offers flexible working hours and
ensures there are sufficient staff on wards in order to minimise pressures
due to workload.

Even, after the HASUs have opened, we would expect low risk stroke
outpatient work (such as patients who had a Transient Ischaemic Attack
more than seven days ago, or more general patients referred for reasons of
vascular risk or unexplained symptoms) to be seen at Medway. Similarly
patients will move back to community services in Medway and Swale after
their acute care has been concluded, and we would expect outpatient
follow-up of stroke patients to be carried out at Medway Maritime
Hospital. For these reasons we will still need to have experienced stroke
staff at Medway.

While it is, of course, possible that some staff may wish to seek roles in
stroke medicine elsewhere, we anticipate that some may wish to take up
medicine, nursing, therapy or physician opportunities in general and/or
geriatric services, and will therefore consider continuing to work at
Medway in the run-up to and once the HASUs have opened.

 2. Will pay be reviewed, and a retention premium be offered to specialist
staff?  No, we are not planning to do this.
 3. Will any other conditions be offered such as free parking or childcare
assistance?  No, we are not planning to do this.

Once again, please accept our apologies for the delay but I hope that this
gives you the answer you need.  If you are dissatisfied with the handling
of your request, you have the right to ask for an internal review.
Internal review requests should be submitted within two months of the date
of receipt of this email and should be addressed to:
