How old is the BBC?

A Willmore made this Freedom of Information request to British Broadcasting Corporation This request has been closed to new correspondence. Contact us if you think it should be reopened.

This request has been withdrawn by the person who made it. There may be an explanation in the correspondence below.

Dear British Broadcasting Corporation,

Yesterday, during their session with Baroness Stowell et al in the House of Lords, BBC Chairman Richard Sharp (wearing a tie for once) when asked "What is the future of the BBC?" is reported to have commenced his reply with "This is, as you all well know, a centuries-old institution".

Could you just remind me, please, in which century the BBC was founded?

Yours faithfully,

Mr A Willmore

Dear FOI Enquiries,

Various sources state 18th October 1922 as the BBC's founding date, so in the 20th Century then. It is one century old, nearly. Mr Sharp must have been misinformed about the organisation of which he is the Chairman, or misunderstood by the Daily Telegraph's journalist.

Please withdraw this request.

Yours sincerely,

Mr A Willmore
