How many students has the University pushed to suicidal feelings and/or attempts due to its treatment of them?

Response to this request is long overdue. By law, under all circumstances, Edge Hill University should have responded by now (details). You can complain by requesting an internal review.

Dear Edge Hill University,

How many students, just the number, not names, have expressed suicidal feelings or thoughts as a result of their treatment by Edge Hill University? For example, how many students have expressed such feelings or thoughts as a result of ignorance of mould in the accommodation, harassment by staff, etc.?

Yours faithfully,

Protector

I am writing in relation to both of your requests (FOI181914514 and FOI181914515). I can confirm both requests have now been processed in accordance with the Freedom of Information Act 2000.

As per our mission statement and values which is published on our website: Edge Hill University will provide an intellectually-stimulating, creative and inclusive environment for its community. Our core values lie in our wholehearted commitment to our staff, students and partners, and our constant efforts to improve in all we do. Our approach is inclusive; we celebrate diversity, and will tirelessly strive to enhance the life opportunities that a good education provides for our students. See https://www.edgehill.ac.uk/about/vision-...

It is therefore never our intention to "mistreat" any individual and we do not hold data on this. Any student who is dissatisfied with the University or feels mistreated in anyway can make a complaint using the Complaints procedure which can be found here. https://www.edgehill.ac.uk/guides/studen.... If they are still dissatisfied at the end of this internal process they have the right to take the case to the Office for the Independent Adjudicator - an independent body set up to review student complaints about higher education providers in England and Wales.

Staff across the University will provide support to students who are suffering from poor mental health. This can also involve support for students with suicidal feelings or support for students who disclose they have made an attempt to take their own life. However this information is not recorded in one place in a way which could be reported upon.

We trust that this information fully answers your request, however if you are dissatisfied with the handling of your request, you have the right to ask for an internal review, quoting the above reference number in all communications. Internal review requests should be submitted within two months of the date of receipt of the response to your original letter and should be addressed to: Dr C Hutchinson-Howorth, Director of Strategic Planning at the University.

If you are not content with the outcome of your review you may apply directly to the Information Commissioner requesting he review our decision. You must submit your complaint in writing to the Commissioner within six months of receiving the response to review letter. The Information Commissioner can be contacted at: The Information Commissioner's Office, Wycliffe House, Water Lane, Wilmslow, Cheshire, SK9 5AF.
