How many PHSO investigators re ICE complaints

The request was successful.

Dear Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman,

This request relates to one I previously made (FDN-190666 ), but I am confident that the two combined will not exceed the cost limit should you consider them to be broadly similar in nature.

1. How many PHSO investigators initially investigated each of the 139 complaints that you accepted about the ICE during 2013/14?

2. How many PHSO staff initially decided that complaints about the ICE could not be investigated by PHSO during:

i. 2012/13
ii. 2011/12?

3. Please provide as much information as possible on each of the three complaints you upheld about the ICE during 2013/14, including details of any compensation payments recommended.

Yours faithfully,

J Roberts

Dear J Roberts

Your information request (FDN-193250)

Further to your email of 4 June 2014, I am writing in response to your information request. I will answer each of your questions in turn.

1. 11 caseworkers initially investigated ICE complaints in 2013/14.

2. In 2011/12, 38 caseworkers worked on ICE complaints that we declined to investigate. In 2012/13, 49 caseworkers worked on ICE complaints that we did not investigate.

3. I have spoken with the Deputy Director of Parliamentary Investigations and he has advised me that the figures with which you were previously provided relate to the calendar year 2013. I am sorry for any confusion caused by our previous response.

In 2013/14, seven complaints about ICE were either fully or partly upheld. I have provided summaries of these complaints and their outcomes in the table below.

I hope that this information is helpful.

Yours sincerely

If complaints drive reform why do the number of complaints keep on rising? With only 7 upheld cases I guess the odds of getting away with it are stacked in your favour.
