The request was successful.

Dear Ministry of Defence,

I was just wondering how many marriage Quarters there are that are empty in the Gosport/Fareham area and why in this day and age of equality and diversity you still have to be married to have one. I'm in a long term loving relationship with a baby on the way, yet im not entitled to one.

Yours faithfully,

Dear Mark,

Thank you for your question.

There are currently 817 Service Family Accommodation (SFA) properties in
Gosport, of which 41 are void, and 491 in Fareham of which 85 are void.
Of those 85, some 60 are currently off-line as they are undergoing major
improvement works.

The MOD will always be required to hold a management margin of void
properties to ensure that homes are available for entitled Service
families as required, often on very short notice.

The MOD's policy on co-habitation in publicly funded accommodation is
contained in the Tri-Service Accommodation Regulations, published as
Joint Service Publication 464. This policy is subject to regular review
and is agreed with the three Armed Forces. JSP 464 Part 1, Chapter 1
Section 5 states:

"Under no circumstances may Service or Civilian personnel cohabit
with a partner (who is not their legal spouse/civil partner) in SFA.
'Cohabitation' describes a situation where the accommodation becomes the
home of
another person."

I hope this explains the position.
