How many Gaelic speakers watch women's football on BBC Alba

The request was refused by British Broadcasting Corporation.

Dear British Broadcasting Corporation,

I watch the Scottish Women's football team's matches on BBC Alba. My wife, who is a coach of grassroots football in the Central Belt, also watches these games. As a coach, she is aware of the number of young girls who are fanatical about the game and are encouraged by the advancement of the women's game, not only in Scotland but apparently worldwide.

However, she is disheartened by the fact that very few, if any, of our up and coming young female players are aware that BBC Alba has the 'contract' to show women's competitive matches. Even if they are aware, I am confident that none of them will understand the Gaelic commentary. Surely a competition, such as the recent Scotland v Finland game, a crucial qualifier for the Women's Euro competition, should be on mainstream TV and not BBC Alba where I suspect very few young female, Gaelic speaking footballers tune in. This does nothing to promote girls' football in Scotland. I would go as far as to say that I find the Gaelic commentary off-putting to non Gaelic speakers.

My question is, what percentage of viewers of women's football are Gaelic speakers? I appreciate your viewing figures may not contain such minutiae of information, but for the future development of girls'/womens' football in Scotland, I believe it should be made public knowledge.

Yours faithfully,

Stuart B
