How many egg laying hens and broiler chickens in Wales by county in 2017 or most recent figures

The request was successful.

Dear Welsh Government,

We have heard that the number of chickens in poultry units in Powys has increased to 7,000,000 birds. We would like to know how many egg laying hens and broiler chickens, in Wales, by county, in 2017 or the most recent figures.

Yours faithfully,

Kristine Moore

Dear Ms Moore

Thank you for your request about poultry numbers.

Estimates for the number of livestock in Wales are collected through the
annual Welsh Agricultural Survey. Results are published in an annual
“first release”, see link below. The spreadsheet at that link has annual
Wales level estimates for poultry (and other livestock and land areas).
These run from 1998 to 2017. 2018 figures will be available in November.
The PDF file contains a description of the survey and commentary on the
results.

At below the Wales level we usually report on seven “agricultural
regions”. These are either single local authorities or groups of local
authorities. Authorities are group where there is limited activity in some
or all of the agricultural sectors . The attached spreadsheet shows the
breakdown of the 2017 estimates for the various classes of poultry by the
seven regions.

All the agricultural statistics outputs are collated at the link below. As
well as results from the Agricultural Survey, these have information about
agricultural incomes and the aggregate agricultural account.

I hope this has been useful. Happy to discuss if you have any further
queries.
