How many drivers cycle, and how many cyclists drive?

The request was successful.

Dear Department for Transport,

Based on the results of the latest National Travel Survey, please could you tell me:

a. How many of the people who hold driving licences also cycle (at any frequency);
b. How many of the people who cycle and hold driving licences also drive (i.e. are active drivers, at any frequency);
c. How many of the people aged 18+ who cycle (at any frequency) hold a driving licence;
d. How many of the people aged 18+ who cycle also drive (i.e. are active drivers, at any frequency).

Thank you.

Yours faithfully

Dear Cherry,

Because this is a request for data in line with those we handle as part of
ordinary day to day activity we have decided to respond to this as
business as usual and so is being handled outside of FOIA.

The figures for cycling and driving licence holding are straightforward.
We have selected people who cycle based on those who reported the
frequency of cycling as more often than “once a year or never”.

Based on the 2017 NTS:

a.         31% of the people who held driving licences also cycle;

c.         85% of the people aged 18+ who cycle also held a driving
licence;

Unfortunately the equivalent frequency question for car travel does not
distinguish between travel as a driver and as a passenger. We are still
investigating the best way to select people who drive based on their
responses.

An alternative way to identify those who drive would be those who reported
driving during the week they recorded their travel. However this would
potentially miss drivers who did not make a trip by driving during that
week.

Once we have identified the best way of selecting people who drive we will
respond with the other figures you have requested.

Regards

Matthew

NATIONAL TRAVELSURVEY, Department for Transport

Dear Cherry,

In answer to your other 2 questions, based on the 2017 NTS:
b. 98% people who cycle and hold a full driving licence also drive;
d. 84% of the people aged 18+ who cycle also drive;

In the NTS people with a car driving licence are asked a question which includes the option “no longer drive”. For these figures people who were asked this question but answered other than “no longer drive” were taken to be people who drive. As before, we selected people who cycle based on those who reported the frequency of cycling as more often than “once a year or never”

I hope this is helpful. If you have further questions about the NTS or the calculation of these figures let us know.

Regards
Matthew
