How many dogs were 'put to sleep' in...?
Dear Wakefield City Council,
How many dogs were 'put to sleep' in 2012?
How many dogs were 'put to sleep' in 2013?
How many dogs were 'put to sleep' in 2014?
How many dogs were 'put to sleep' in 2015?
Yours faithfully,
James Jones
Dear Mr Jones,
Freedom of Information Act 2000 - Request for Information
I am writing in respect of your recent enquiry for information held by the
Authority under the provisions of the Freedom of Information Act.
Please find the response to your request below.
Wakefield Council does not put dogs to sleep. We keep the dogs for 7
days, then the kennel takes ownership of the dog and they try to re-home
as many dogs as possible.
We never ask about any dog once it becomes the property of the kennel and
therefore do not know how many are put to sleep.
Please do not hesitate to contact me should you have any further queries
regarding this matter.
Yours sincerely

Dear Wakefield City Council,
Please pass this on to the person who conducts Freedom of Information reviews.
I am writing to request an internal review of Wakefield City Council's handling of my FOI request 'How many dogs were 'put to sleep' in...?'.
It is not possible that no dogs are put to sleep either by the council, or individuals and/or organisations under the instruction of the council. I know of specific examples where dogs have been put to sleep.
Is it possible Wakefield City Council has kept no record of the number of dogs put to sleep? I would accept this.
The original answer would also claim you rehome all dogs with medical problems, you rehome all banned and dangerous dogs. I don't believe this to be true. This would be illegal on the part of the council and would require the organisations who took the animals to be prosecuted.
A full history of my FOI request and all correspondence is available on the Internet at this address: https://www.whatdotheyknow.com/request/h...
Yours faithfully,
James Jones
Dear Mr Jones,
Freedom of Information Act 2000 - Request for Information
I am writing in respect of your enquiry for information held by the Authority under the provisions of the Freedom of Information Act, and your e-mail dated 7 August 2016.
Having noted your comments, I referred the original request back to the department which had provided us with the information which we used as the basis for our response to you dated 12 July 2016. As a result, it has become apparent that there has been a misunderstanding.
As stated previously, the Council does not usually put down dogs. Illegal breeds are passed to the police for them to deal with. We store all dogs in the kennels for 7 days, and after that the kennels become the owners legally and decide what to do with the dog. If they put them to sleep they advise us. The only time we put down a dog within the first 7 days is on the advice of a vet, and we do not keep specific records for this.
We can therefore confirm the following numbers of dogs (bearing in mind the above) that we are aware have been put down. Please note that the figures are for financial, rather than calendar, years. The 2012 figure relates to 2012/13.
How many dogs were 'put to sleep' in 2012? = 111
How many dogs were 'put to sleep' in 2013? = 92
How many dogs were 'put to sleep' in 2014? = 98
How many dogs were 'put to sleep' in 2015? = 66
I apologise again for the unfortunate misunderstanding which occurred. I hope that your request has now been answered to your satisfaction, but please do not hesitate to contact me should you have any further queries regarding this matter.
Yours sincerely
