How do I get a public inquiry into how a council operates?

The request was partially successful.

Sheila Oliver

Dear Department for Communities and Local Government,

Stockport Council put a 550 primary school and 78 babies nursery on a still gassing toxic waste dump. They knew before they did so that they wouldn't be able to get asbestos or slowly occurring pollution insurance, so one wonders why they went ahead.

When I pointed out the brown asbestos had been inadequately removed, they ignored that evidence claiming I was being vexatious.

So, following the Diane Willman hearing at the Supreme Court, the Council is automatically liable for any cases of mesothelioma contracted in a school. If there is 1) no insurance, 2) they haven't removed the brown asbestos properly, who is going to pay the damages claims? Stockport Council has no money.

I have raised the matter with the Health and Safety Executive, the Dept for Schools and Families, it has been raised with the Ombudsman, who wants a quiet life, the Dept for Communities and Local Government, my local MP and junior DCLG minister, who wanted the entire issue kept secret - in favour of open and accountable local government? That man? I think not!

So, what options exist for me to bring this dubious council to account?

Deliberately killing children is towards the upper limit of naughty, you know.

I look forward to some sort of sensible reply.

Yours faithfully,
Sheila

Sounds like you may be waiting for some time Sheila,
But good luck with it all. I have been vigorously exploring NHS Complaints for almost 6 years and your comment "upper end of naughty" resonates with me too!
All the best

Thanks for your support. I am a bereaved mum and work in a busy cancer department. How dare they deliberately endanger the lives of young children and babies or disable them for life with lung disease -all for a fast buck! I am in this for decades if necessary. Uncle Eric Pickles had better start listening. We saw with the Quality Care Commission how they didn't listen to whistleblowers. No watchdog that I have come across can be bothered, except possibly the Information Commission. They all want a quiet, fat cat life. Well, things need to change.

Good luck with the NHS and your issues.

Love

Sheila

Seems Cameron is making pledges! You'll recognize the comments I'm sure!
As a bereaved Mum too, I fully understand your pain and frustration.
Take care

Bereaved mums are terrifying. We won't give up, there is nothing they can threaten us with which is worse than what we have been through and we can't be bought off at any price.

Give 'em hell!

Lots of love

Sheila

CONTACTUS,

Dear Mrs Oliver,

Thank you for your email of 5 June and earlier ones in March to the Department for Communities and Local Government in which you raise concerns about Stockport Council and enquiry about how to obtain information from them on a local matter.

If you have not already done so, you may wish to approach the Local Government Ombudsman (LGO). The LGO looks at complaints about councils. It provides a free service and they investigate complaints in a fair and independent way, without taking sides.

Contact details for the LGO can be found on their website http://www.lgo.org.uk/ or your can call the LGO Advice Team on 0300 061 0614

Regards.

Dear CONTACTUS,

I can't contact the LGO as although this is in the town where I live and although they are wasting millions of pounds of my money the LGO isn't interested unless I live in the exact vicinity of the toxic waste dump school.

What other plans does Mr. Pickles have for holding councils to account?

Yours sincerely,

Sheila Oliver

CONTACTUS,

Dear Ms Oliver,

I have consulted with our officials suggest that if you have a problem with the council you should make an official complaint. You might also consider writing to the leader, or the Chief Executive. You may wish to get a councillor involved.

We have no further advice to add.

Dear CONTACTUS,

There is no functioning complaints system at Stockport Council.

Hi Sheila and her legion of followers. If you want the truth about Public Services and Local Government Ombudsmen visit http://ombudsmanwatch.org/

I too am an avid information requester to Stockport MBC. You may remember just recently the fiasco apropos the spending of £7.5m on wheelie bins which made it into the local and national press. Read it at http://menmedia.co.uk/stockportexpress/n...

A good contact at the Stockport Express is lead reporter Alex Scapens who is always on the lookout for 'goings-on' at the council. You should make contact him and show the council-tax payer how the council try their best to suppress information you seek.

Keep up the good work Sheila.

Keep at 'em Sheila....all this with phone hacking and the like is causing angst too. We have finally won publication of the "unagreed" SUI Report.......I have asked for publicity although they wish I hadn't!
Will keep you posted....although you may read about it soon!
All good wishes

Hi

Thanks for all your kind comments.

Dee, what is the SUI report?

Ivan, you will note they are cutting school crossing patrols now. They have sent their officers to very posh hotels for conferences, very posh indeed. They should send them to the nearest Premier Inn. Watch this space.

Lots of love

Sheila

SUI means Serious Untoward Incident....and should be carried out in a "timely manner" aka 5 years later?
