How diverse are the senior staff who work for the GMC?

The request was partially successful.

Patricia Murray

Dear General Medical Council,

According to the GMC's Charity Commission report from 2020, 180 GMC staff earn £60,000 pa or more. Of these, 40 earn £100,000 pa or more.

I would like to know the following:

1. Of the 180 staff earning £60,000 or more, how many identify as being white?

2. Of the 180 staff earning £60,000 or more, how many identify as being male?

3. Of the 180 staff earning £60,000 or more, how many have a medical degree?

4. Of the 40 staff earning £100,000 or more, how many identify as being white?

5. Of the 40 staff earning £100,000 or more, how many identify as being male?

6. Of the 40 staff earning £100,000 or more, how many have a medical degree?

Yours faithfully,

Patricia Murray

Dear Patricia

Thank you for your request for information about the 180 GMC staff earning
£60,000 pa or more, referenced in the GMC’s report from 2020.

Please find below responses to each of your requests:

Of the 180 staff earning £60,000 or more, how many identify as being
white?

164 staff members.

Of the 180 staff earning £60,000 or more, how many identify as being male?

96 staff members.

Of the 40 staff earning £100,000 or more, how many identify as being
white?

36 staff members.

Of the 40 staff earning £100,000 or more, how many identify as being male?

25 staff members.

In response to your request for information about the 180 staff member’s
qualifications I write to inform you that we cannot electronically capture
this information, we would have to retrieve and manually check each staff
member’s file.

There is an exemption at section 12 of the Freedom of Information Act
2000, which states that we are not required to comply with a request if we
estimate that the cost of doing so would exceed the appropriate limit,
which in this case it would. I provide further details below.

The exemption

The Freedom of Information (Fees and Appropriate Limit) Regulations 2004
has set the ‘appropriate limit’ at £450 for public authorities such as the
GMC. This is equivalent to two and a half days work. In estimating the
cost the public authority can take into account the cost of determining,
locating, retrieving and extracting the information requested. We reserve
the right to refuse requests that would cost in excess of this limit and
will significantly impact on our business.

In order for us to retrieve and manually check each staff members file
would take approximately 10 minutes. To review all 180 staff members files
would take 30 hours. Based on an hourly rate of £25 per hour (which is set
by the Freedom of Information (Fees and Appropriate Limit) Regulations
2004) this would cost us £750 . Your request would therefore cost us in
excess of the ‘appropriate limit’ to process.

Your right to appeal

I am sorry I have been unable to provide all the information you
requested. You can appeal against my decision to the Information Access
Manager.  If you want to appeal, please set out your reasons and email
[1][GMC request email]

You can also appeal to the Information Commissioner, the regulator of the
FOIA – we can provide more details about this if you need them.

Kind regards

Louise
