Households presenting as homeless between 2022 and 2023 that claim Universal Credit

Response to this request is long overdue. By law, under all circumstances, East Devon District Council should have responded by now (details). You can complain by requesting an internal review.

Dear FOI Team,

I write to request information on the number of households claiming Universal Credit and/or housing benefit who presented to you as homeless between May 2022 and June 2023.

As part of this request, I would like this information to be broken down into the following:

(i) The total number of households claiming Universal Credit presenting as homeless since May 2022, broken down into leasehold property, private rented and social housing;

(i) The total number of households claiming housing benefit – part of the legacy welfare system – presenting as homeless since May 2022, broken down into leasehold property, private rented and social housing (if relevant).

If the cost of breaking down property types exceeds the figure set out in Section 12 of the FOI Act, then please provide a total amount of households presenting while claiming Universal Credit.

If possible, please present the information in Excel format.

Yours faithfully,

Oliver Murphy

EDDC, East Devon District Council

Dear Mr Murphy,

We have a query with your request:

Someone in receipt of Universal Credit (UC) who has been presented as
homeless and has been placed in temporary accommodation would claim
Housing Benefit (HB) rather than receiving housing costs as part of their
UC for the homeless placement.

This means that some can be in receipt of UC and still receive HB for
their homeless placement.

Please can I therefore ask for further clarification on this FOI:

(i) The total number of households claiming Universal Credit presenting as
homeless since May 2022, broken down into leasehold property, private
rented and social housing;

Do you want the number of households receiving UC that did not receive HB
for their homeless placement?

(i) The total number of households claiming housing benefit – part of the
legacy welfare system – presenting as homeless since May 2022, broken down
into leasehold property, private rented and social housing (if relevant).

Do you mean total number of Households claiming HB in temporary
accommodation in total, including those who are also in receipt of UC or
just those whose income is not UC.

Our Homeless cases are classed as board and lodge, self-contained and
leased. Is this the breakdown you require?

Until we receive your clarification on the above points, your request will
be put on hold.

Kind regards,

Information and Complaints Officer
