Hospital treatments for abortion complications

Kevin Duffy made this Freedom of Information request to Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust as part of a batch sent to 172 authorities Automatic anti-spam measures are in place for this older request. Please let us know if a further response is expected or if you are having trouble responding.

The request was partially successful.

Dear Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust,

I am writing to request the following information under the Freedom of Information Act 2000.

Please provide the total number of patients in which their treatment was coded as 'Pregnancy with abortive outcome' using one of the following ranges: O030-O39 Spontaneous abortion, O040-O049 Medical abortion, or O070-O079 Failed attempted abortion – I have included a full set of the required ICD-10 codes at the bottom of this request.

For each individual code, as noted below, I would like the totals for each twelve-months period from 01 January 2017 to 31 December 2023. My preference is the totals in each calendar year, Jan-Dec, but understand if you are only able to provide this in your chosen financial years, e.g., April – March, in which case from 01 April 2016 to 31 March 2024.

I would like receive the data in an Excel format, if that is possible please.

I would appreciate your confirmation of receipt of this request, and your prompt response within 20 working days.

Thank you,

Kevin Duffy.

Dear Andrew (Digital & Information),

Thank you for sharing the annual totals for the listed ICD-10 ranges. I had asked for the numbers “for each individual code”, and I wonder if you might be able to provide that please? I understand that you cannot share exact numbers when these are small and might lead to identifying a particular patient. That said, I do want you to provide the data broken down by individual code, even if this means that some entries will be marked as <10 or <5; this would align your response with those that I am receiving from other Hospital Trusts. I expect that the annual data for O031, O034, O036, O039, O041, O044, and O049 are very likely to be large enough numbers to avoid the issue of cases being identifiable.

I look forward to receiving these data from you, thanks for your kind assistance.

Yours sincerely,

Kevin Duffy

Dear Andrew Tait (Digital & Information),

On 18 July you provided me with a partial response to my FOI request; on 24 July you acknowledged my request for a full response. I want you to know that Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust is one of less than ten Trusts which has not yet provided me with the full data requested, more than one hundred NHS Trusts have. I don’t want to resort to asking for an internal review or reporting this to the Information Commissioner, it would be preferable to have a response from you.

Please let me know if you need any clarification regarding my request, thanks.

Yours sincerely,

Kevin Duffy
