Homeopathic medicine decisions and funding

The request was successful.

Dear Greater Glasgow NHS Board,

Under FOISA, I seek all information recorded within the last three years that would detail:

Decisions made about homeopathic intervention within the trust, for example whether any decision has been made about the CIC in Glasgow, or any decision to make homeopathic intervention available via GPs.

In particular, what clinical decision making process was behind this. As a hypothetical, we might see that the NICE guidelines were followed and that's why xyz course of action was taken.

(Any) public funding/expenditure wholly, primarily or substantially spent on homeopathic intervention.

To assist you in locating relevant information, I am aware that NHS England defunded such interventions a few years ago, and I am aware that options for the future of the Glasgow CIC was being discussed in the last few years. I'm looking to establish the current state and any planned changes to the provision of homeopathy by NHS Scotland (in this case NHSGGC).

Yours faithfully,

Ewan McLean

Dear FOI BOARD HQ,

By way of assistance could you please help me understand how homeopathy, which requires medicines, can still be practised (as stated in the FOI reply) today at the CIC when the last dispensing was closed almost three years ago?

Could you also confirm for me that across the entire nhsgcc trust, the only financial records available are the ones supplied here?

Yours sincerely,

Ewan McLean

FOI BOARD HQ, Greater Glasgow NHS Board

Dear Mr McLean

Thank you for your follow-up enquiry.  I can confirm that we no longer
dispense homeopathic remedies from the Centre for Integrative Care (CIC),
but our CIC clinicians are trained in Homoeopathy and as such can and do
still assess patients and make recommendations for appropriate
homoeopathic remedies.

Patients can then discuss this with their GP or source the remedy
themselves.

In relation to your query regarding financial information, you asked for:

(Any) public funding/expenditure wholly, primarily or substantially spent
on homeopathic intervention.

The information that we provided was in response to the specific question
in your request, and showed a breakdown of running costs for the CIC over
the last 3 years.

If you have a more specific question regarding financial information then
we will be happy to deal with that as a separate request, although it is
unlikely that we will be able to extract expenditure only on homoeopathic
intervention, as distinct from the other work of the CIC.

I hope that this is helpful.  As indicated in our response letter, if you
are dissatisfied with our response or our handling of your request, then
you have the right to request a Review.

Yours sincerely
