HMRC Claims By Mytle Lloyd on Scams
Dear HM Revenue and Customs,
It has been reported in the press as a statement of Myrtle Lloyd, director general of customer services, that HMRC has received 58,000 reports of scammers offering fake tax rebates.
Please confirm a split of how HMRC received these, eg, by post, telephone.
Please provide a postal address and telephone number to report scam emails to.
Is each report about the same business or is it about multiple businesses?
Has HMRC done any work to verify that reports are actually scams? How many of the 58,000 reports has HMRC checked to determine if they were scams?
Out of any reports checked how many were HMRC able to say were both scams and genuine. i.e. please provide a number of each category.
What criteria do HMRC use to determine if a report is genuinely a scam?
Of the 58,000 reported services, how many has HMRC checked to determine if they are registered for money laundering purposed with HMRC as an accountancy provider?
Please provide some images of the most frequent tax rebate scam notifications HMRC received in 2023.
Yours faithfully,
Anthony Mills
