Department for Education

Dear Mr Tidd,
Thank you for your e-mail received on 26 September under the Freedom of
Information Act 2000 (“the Act”) in response to the reply to your previous
request for information (ref 2014/0057435) relating to the development of
the new national curriculum for history.  Specifically you requested:

(a) the names of members of the "expert group set up to examine the draft
and suggest improvements" described in the response;

(b) the name of the Chair of the same expert group;

(c) details of any payments made to the Chair and other members of the
expert group in relation to the work undertaken as part of the expert
group.

I have dealt with your request under the Freedom of Information Act 2000.
Your correspondence has been allocated reference number 2014/0063616.

(a) The expert group effectively comprised all of the individuals who
attended either or both of the history round tables convened on 26 March
and 10 June 2013.  A list of the names is attached at annex A.  They were
all involved one way or another during the process, either by providing
advice at the roundtables or providing input during drafting.

(b) Due to the nature of the group as described in (a) above, there was
not a formally nominated chair in the conventional sense of the word, and
I apologise if the use of this word has caused confusion.  The individual
who supplied the rationale on behalf of the group, in response to your
previous FoI request, was Jamie Byrom. He acted more as an intermediary
for a sub-group of experts convened to advise on the revision in keeping
with the parameters set out by the Secretary of State.

(c)  No payments were made to those listed at annex A in relation to the
work undertaken as part of the expert group.  Only expenses were
re-imbursed, and these total £457.25.

If you have any queries about this letter, please contact me. Please
remember to quote the reference number above in any future communications.

If you are unhappy with the way your request has been handled, you should
make a complaint to the Department by writing to me within two calendar
months of the date of this letter.  Your complaint will be considered by
an independent review panel, who were not involved in the original
consideration of your request.

If you are not content with the outcome of your complaint to the
Department, you may then contact the Information Commissioner’s Office.

Yours sincerely,

Elaine Schollar
