Historic List of Streets
Dear North Yorkshire County Council,
I would like a copy of the List of Streets, that is to say the adopted roads maintainable at public expense in whole or in part that are maintained by yourself, or the previous North Riding County Council, if available.
I would like a copy of the List as it was at 20th January 2005. However if it is easier for you to supply a list that shows the entry date onto the List and removal date from the List for individual streets that will also be ideal.
I am particularly interested in knowing the parish, the classification of the Street and if possible if it arises from any of the Inclosure or Commons Acts if this is also available
Many thanks.
Yours faithfully,
Chris Street

North Yorkshire County Council.
Dear Chris,
As you have requested a list of 'adopted' roads, I must explain the term
'adoption' as it relates to highways: Highways can only be described as
adopted where a formal notice has been processed, this is one of several
ways that a highway can be included on the List of Streets and termed a
'Highway Maintainable at Public Expense'. Only about 5% of the road
network in North Yorkshire have formally been adopted, the remaining
routes have been included on the List of Street through other means.
If you follow this link
[1]https://www.northyorks.gov.uk/road-recor... it provides
opportunity to access the County Councils historic List of Streets up to
2012. Please note that A, B and C Roads were not included in this List,
neither were those streets in the Urban Areas of Harrogate and
Scarborough, as from the commencement of North Yorkshire in 1974 until
circa 2010 Harrogate and Scarborough District Councils acted as Agents of
the Local Highway Authority and maintained their own Lists.
There is no requirement for the List of Streets to have either an entry or
removal date, nor the Parish, the classification or how it came to be
included on the List (including whether from formal adoption, Inclosure
Awards or Commons Acts). There is also no requirement for information
regarding usage rights to be included; however, the above link does
includes the Parishes and all the streets are either unclassified roads or
footpaths/ footways.
Attached to this email is a spreadsheet of the County Council's current
List of Streets, this list includes A, B, C and Unclassified Roads and
those roads in the Urban Areas of Harrogate and Scarborough, but not those
routes recorded on the County Councils Definitive Map and Statement, this
current List of Streets does not include the parish. Please note that
where 'Road Status' is *MANY* this refers to streets that have sections
which are a combination or private, public or prospectively maintainable.
This link
[2]https://maps.northyorks.gov.uk/connect/a...
on the NYCC webpage will take you to an interactive map of all the roads,
footways and Public Rights of Way in North Yorkshire and this link
[3]https://maps.northyorks.gov.uk/connect/a...
will allow you to find the parish council areas.
I trust this information is of some use to you, if you require any further
information, please send all enquiries to [4][email address] , note that
the Council is able to charge a fee for certain information.
