To Whom It May Concern

I wonder if it would be possible to request some information regarding Brighton's public parks under the Freedom of Information Act. I wish to acquire information on the type of herbicides and/ or pesticides, such as ‘Monsanto's Roundup’, that are used on Brighton's parks, fields and road side grass areas.

Are these type of products used? If so, which ones? In what quantity are they used? Where are they used specifically in Brighton? All the information you can provide on this subject would be greatly appreciated.

I look forward to your reply.

Apologies for the delay:

Cityparks do use herbicides but very little in the way of pesticides

The most often used herbicide is Glyphosate however not Monsanto’s Roundup formulation, we use mainly Barclay or Mascot Hi-Aktiv Glyphosate
This would be used to control difficult weeds in various situations around Brighton & Hove’s City parks and green spaces, it is not used regularly in any given park.
Examples would be the spraying of weeds/grass growing around obstacles (posts/ alongside wall etc.) particularly on grass verges, weeds growing through hard surfaces such as paving and brick paths, difficult perennial weeds such as Bindweed or Nettles growing in shrub beds.
Another area where herbicides are used is on fine turf areas such as bowling greens, on these we occasionally use a selective herbicide to kill off certain turf weeds, the selective weed killer mainly used is Barclay Holster XL containing Fluroxypyr, dicamba and 2,4-D

None of the above chemicals are used on a regular basis, they are only used to control weed problems as they arise around the city’s parks and green spaces.
