Dear FOI,

can you tell me how Buses report there location to countdown and if this is by fixed road side points Ie transceivers attached to street fixtures and you provide locations of these points

Yours sincerely,

Glen Turnbull

FOI, Transport for London

Dear Mr Turnbull

Thank you for this clarification.

Can you also please confirm whether the timetables you have requested are just for services provided by TfL's London Buses network, or whether they should include services run by county councils serving parts of Greater London, for example.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours sincerely

Dear FOI,

any route that is available to view on the countdown webpage of http://m.countdown.tfl.gov.uk i would guess this is limited to the TfL London Bus Network

Yours sincerely,

Glen Turnbull

The buses report their locations via a GPS system built into the iBus radios. This knows almost exactly where any bus is at any time, and its route and destination.

Dear Mr Turnbull

TfL Ref: 1631-1213

Thank you for your email received by Transport for London (TfL) on 3
January 2013 asking for full timetables of all London Bus Routes.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of
the Freedom of Information Act and TfL’s information access policy.  I can
confirm TfL holds some of the information you require. You asked for:

Full timetables for all London Bus Routes not the abbreviated form now
seen at bus stops.

Any route that is available to view on the countdown webpage of
[1]http://m.countdown.tfl.gov.uk i would guess this is limited to the TfL
London Bus Network.

Unfortunately, we do not hold this information because TfL does not
produce non-abbreviated versions of bus timetables, only the versions you
see at bus stops and online here:

[2]http://journeyplanner.tfl.gov.uk/user/XS...

Can you tell me how Buses report there location to countdown and if this
is by fixed road side points Ie transceivers attached to street fixtures
and you provide locations of these points

I can advise that Countdown takes information from London Buses’ iBus
system. iBus does not use 'fixed road side points', it uses a combination
of technologies to accurately and reliably position every bus along its
route, we call this Automatic Vehicle Location (AVL). Every bus knows
where it is and the system knows where all 8,844 buses are.  AVL
information is combined with information about the schedule, route and bus
stop locations to trigger audio-visual information on the bus. This
ensures that the right information is available at the right position
along the route.

A key requirement of the system is the accuracy of the reported bus
location, as this forms the core of the control system and enables
real-time passenger information to be accurately relayed within the
vehicles and accurate arrival predictions to appear on Countdown signs. To
provide this precision, a combination of the Global Positioning System
(GPS) and different location techniques, including dead reckoning, count
from the speedometer and turns and a high tech mapping system have been
used to supply the accurate high quality data that iBus needs.

Each bus in the fleet has also been installed with an-board computer with
General Packet Radio Service (GPRS – mobile phone technology), a Private
Mobile Radio system (PMR) which is only used by London Buses, Wireless
Local Area Network (WLAN) capability, and information display signs and
voice announcement systems.

If this is not the information you are looking for, or if you are unable
to access it for some reason, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Please see the attached information sheet for details of your right to
appeal as well as information on copyright and what to do if you would
like to re-use any of the information we have disclosed.
