MHRA Customer Services, Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency

FOI 14/169

Dear Ms Castillo,

Thank you for your email requesting information on the number of clinical trial participants in the UK or England from 2009 to 2013.

The Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency is the agency responsible for making sure medicines and medical devices work and are acceptably safe. However, we are not involved in the recruitment of volunteers for clinical trials; therefore the MHRA does not hold this information. Local hospitals and companies recruit for volunteers for clinical trials and the Health Research Agency promotes and protects the interests of patients in health research while streamlining the regulation, we therefore suggest contacting them.

Email: [email address]

If you are dissatisfied with the handling of your request, you have the right to ask for an internal review. Internal review requests should be submitted within two months of the date of receipt of the response to your original email, and can be made by response to this email address.

If you are not content with the outcome of the internal review, you have the right to apply directly to the Information Commissioner for a decision. The Information Commissioner can be contacted at:

Information Commissioner’s Office,
Wycliffe House,
Water Lane,
