Dear Ceri,

I am replying to your e-mail of 2 March 2011 in which you requested information from the Department under the Freedom of Information Act on:

You requested information about the areas/organisation covered by the Department for Work and Pensions. Under Section 21 of the Freedom of Information Act allows us to direct you to information which is already reasonably accessible to you. The information is available on the Department for Work and Pensions website http://www.dwp.gov.uk/about-dwp/. If you do not have access to the Internet at home, you may be able to use facilities at your local public library.
Within the job categories you have quoted the Department for Work and Pensions employs Practitioner Psychologists only.
As at 14 March 2011 there are 47 Practitioner Psychologists working in Jobcentre Plus, part of the Department for Work and Pensions. They are currently located across 11 Jobcentre Plus regions including Scotland and Wales.

There are 2 Practitioner Psychologists based in Sheffield and 3 Practitioner Psychologists based in London at the DWP Corporate Centre.

I can confirm that DWP does not employ any temporary agency Practitioner Psychologists.

In your request you have not specified a time period therefore I have looked at the last twelve month period and can confirm that no permanent Practitioner Psychologist jobs have been resourced through recruitment agencies. It is DWP policy to recruit Practitioner Psychologists through professional publications (and on line) via the British Psychological Society, the professional body for psychology in the UK.

I can confirm that we haven't recruited anyone into the Practitioner Psychologist within the last twelve month to give you any information on total spends. However if we had recruited we would be unable to extract data just on the criteria requested. To obtain this data we would have to manually extract this information. However, we estimate that the cost of complying with your request would exceed the appropriate limit of £600. The appropriate limit has been specified in regulations and for central Government it is set at £600. This represents the estimated cost of one person spending 3½ working days in determining whether the Department holds the information, and locating, retrieving and extracting the information. Under section 12 of the Freedom of Information Act the Department is not obliged to comply with your request and we will not be processing this question.
I can confirm that the Department procures occupational health services to help managers and employees resolve health problems which are affecting the employee's ability to attend or carry out work. This commercial contract includes the provision of physiotherapy for employees with a musculoskeletal disorder which affects their work. The cost of the physiotherapists is included in the price for the overall service and cannot be broken down by job type, per department, per location.

I can confirm that the average salary for Psychologists is £34,999. However the Department employs Practitioner Psychologists in several grades depending on their role and other qualifications therefore the average salary is reflective of this.

I can confirm The Office for National Statistics (ONS) provides estimates of employment and unemployment based on the Labour Force Survey (LFS). Information on the LFS can be found on the ONS website at http://www.statistics.gov.uk/StatBase/So..., and some information by occupation and industry is published on the Nomis website www.nomisweb.co.uk although not to the level of detail in your request.

ONS also provides statistics on average earnings through the Average Survey of Hours and Earnings (ASHE). Information on ASHE can be found on the ONS website at: http://www.statistics.gov.uk/StatBase/Pr....

Information on Jobseeker's Allowance (JSA) claimants by usual occupation and sought occupation is published on the Nomis website www.nomisweb.co.uk. Section 21 of the Freedom of Information Act allows us to direct you to information which is already reasonably accessible to you. To produce statistics by usual or sought occupation:
Go to www.nomisweb.co.uk
Select Advanced Query in the Detailed Statistics panel
Select the dataset claimant count - current - claimant count occupation
Then make your choices from the "options" menu on the left, and click download data.
