Hazardous Waste

We're waiting for Emma May to read a recent response and update the status.

Dear Staffordshire County Council,

We spoke recently about how you check whether road planings are hazardous or non-hazardous waste. The questions to ask are:

1. When undertaking roadworks how deep do you or your contractors normally dig?
2. How do you establish whether the excavated material constitutes hazardous or non-hazardous waste?

Yours faithfully,

Emma May

Dear Emma May

Thank you for your request for information.

Please find information provided by the relevant service area(s) set out below.

1. When undertaking roadworks how deep do you or your contractors normally dig? - Our depth of dig depends on the required design depth and as every site is different there is no 'normal depth'.

2. How do you establish whether the excavated material constitutes hazardous or non-hazardous waste? - Prior to a scheme site investigation coring is carried out at locations covering the extent of the works. Cores are carried out to full depth of the bound carriageway. They are all sprayed with PAK marker paint which turns yellow to indicate the presence of Tar. If not tar is present the road planings will go into the county councils recycling programme. If tar is indicated as present and material cannot stay in place the planings are treated as hazardous.

If you have any queries or require any further information please do not hesitate to contact me.
