Harlaw Academy cost of fire

Grete Wilson made this Freedom of Information request to Aberdeen City Council

This request has been closed to new correspondence from the public body. Contact us if you think it ought be re-opened.

The request was partially successful.

Dear Aberdeen City Council,

I am an engineering masters student at The University of Edinburgh carrying out research for my thesis on the financial cost of school fires under the supervision of Dr David Rush. I am specifically interested in indirect costs as a result of fire such as hiring additional facilities, transportation and staffing costs incurred in managing the crisis.

I understand that a fire took place at Harlaw Academy on the 12th December 2015 which caused the school to shut and re-open on the 15th December. I also understand that part of the school, including the library was significantly damaged due to the fire.

I would be very grateful to get cost data associated with the direct damage to the building, as well as the indirect costs associated with the incident such as bus and transport costs to ship students to different schools; temporary equipment costs; staffing costs incurred from managing the crisis, and the costs associated with the provision of temporary facilities.

I do not want to jeopardise any sensitive data and can keep the school anonymous in my research. I am happy to discuss how to manage this information.

I can be contacted by email and also provide my mobile number.

Yours Sincerely,

Grete Wilson

Dear Ms Wilson,

Thank you for your information request of 29 October 2018. Aberdeen City
Council (ACC) has completed the necessary search for the information
requested. Our response is now detailed below.

I understand that a fire took place at Harlaw Academy on the 12th December
2015 which caused the school to shut and re-open on the 15th December. I
also understand that part of the school, including the library was
significantly damaged due to the fire.

I would be very grateful to get cost data associated with the direct
damage to the building, as well as the indirect costs associated with the
incident such as bus and transport costs to ship students to different
schools; temporary equipment costs; staffing costs incurred from managing
the crisis, and the costs associated with the provision of temporary
facilities.

Please find attached breakdown of costs associated with the fire. Please
note that there was no requirement to transport pupils to other buildings
or provide temporary accommodation, so there were no costs associated with
these types of activity.

We hope this helps with your request.

Yours sincerely,

Grant Webster
