Halal meat served to patients & Staff within all of your establishments

Kenny Green made this Freedom of Information request to University Hospitals of Derby and Burton NHS Foundation Trust

This request has been closed to new correspondence from the public body. Contact us if you think it ought be re-opened.

The request was successful.

Dear Derby Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust,

It has been widely reported in the media that some NHS Trusts are either serving Halal meat alongside non-halal meat or going fully halal by banning all pork based meat products and only offering meat that has been religiously slaughtered thus making it halal. Some NHS Trusts are only providing for example halal chicken but beef and pork remains non halal and employ the services of outside caterers.

I would like you to provide the following information.

1. Who provides the food within your establishments?

By establishments I mean all hospitals, medical facilities and teaching facilities that fall under the control of your Trust.

By who provides the food I mean for example (but not limited to) is it in house or do you employ the services of an outside contractor (such as Sedexo or some other catering company).

If you use outside contractors please provide a list of who these are.

2. If you are serving halal meat products to patients, visitors or staff, either halal certified or sourced from a company that may use religious slaughter methods, are the meals fully labelled in any way as halal or may contain halal?

This could be (but not limited to), the menu cards presented to patients in ward, clearly marked and labelled in any staff or patient restaurants, cafes or any place within your establishments where food is served or sold.

3. If you are serving halal meat products, please say exactly which products these are?

For example, stating all chicken products or meals would be acceptable, likewise so would stating all chicken and lamb products or meals but not beef and so on.

4. If you are serving halal meat products to patients, visitors or staff and these products are not labelled would this information be readily available on request from a member of staff.

For example if I was a patient and I saw that on that days menu lamb was listed, would the nurse or staff member who provided the menu be able to answer me if I asked if it was religiously slaughtered?

The same thing would apply to your restaurants and other food outlets?

5. What provision do you have, if any, for providing non-halal or non religiously slaughtered meals to those who do not wish to eat halal or religiously slaughtered meat?

I thank you for your time and consideration.

Yours faithfully,

Kenny Green
