The request was successful.

Dear Sir,

What are the total annual gross costs associated with the publication of 'Hackney Today'?

Please include in this figure staffing, commissioning, publication and printing, delivery, and all other associated costs.

In addition, how much money does 'Hackney Today' raise annually through advertising (not including advertising from Hackney Council and Hackney Homes); and what are the estimated savings made by the council by placing advertising and statutory public and legal notices in Hackney Today instead of in external commercial publications.

Yours faithfully,

Francis Gaskin

Carolyn Asboe, London Borough of Hackney

Dear Francis Gaskin

Freedom of Information request - Hackney Today * Costs

I am writing with respect to your email of 17 October 2008 requesting
information under the Freedom of Information act.

The costs for Hackney Today in this financial year are forecast to be
£551,000, including staffing, print, and distribution. The paper is
produced in-house and printed and distributed by external contractors.
We would expect savings on this in 09/10 as we are re-letting our print
and distribution contracts in partnership with several other London
boroughs, which we expect to bring quite substantial savings.

We do not have a final figure for advertising revenue for this financial
year but last year our external income was £144,471. We would expect an
increase on this in financial year 08/09 and 09/10 as we have increased
pagination and therefore have more designated display advertising space.

The estimated saving for placing our statutory notices in Hackney Today
rather than an alternative local publication were approximately £138,000
last year. This is based on an average of two pages of statutory notices
in the last financial year. We are now averaging three pages of statutory
notices per edition so would expect these savings to increase by a third
in the next financial year.

The remaining costs for Hackney Today are met through internal advertising
revenue from directorate service areas. Producing Hackney Today means
that the Council can use it for all door to door resident communications,
meaning that events, services changes, consultations and many other things
can be advertised in the paper, saving money on leaflets, external
advertising and additional distribution costs.

I will be happy to provide you with revised costs following the re-letting
of contracts towards the end of this financial year and can be contacted
on the below details.

Yours sincerely
