Dear Mr Ovens,

Thank you for your email. I will forward your comments to our Firearms

NOT PROTECTIVELY MARKED

Dear Brian Ovens,

Freedom of Information (Scotland) Act 2002

Thank you for your request for information received on 4th August, 2010,
and further clarified on 9th and 19th August, 2010.  I have dealt with
this in accordance with the Freedom of Information (Scotland) Act 2002 and
respond to your request as follows :

Your Request(s) :

 1. How many Police cars or other vehicles now carry guns in the Central
region? By this I mean is it every vehicle, every second vehicle
etc. Response :   Central Scotland Police can advise that this varies
on a daily basis depending on operations and we could only provide a
generic answer relating to the number of regularly deployable vehicles
such as we have 1 Armed Response Vehicle and currently have 39
Authorised Firearms Officers (although the AFO figure can change month
by month). Our Force currently have a 24 hour firearms
capability, with the clear aim of enhancing community safety.
 2.  How much has it cost to supply Central Scotland Police with all guns
and ammunition?  Response :  Please find attached document containing
the information requested 2008/2009 - £21,309.46, 2009/2010 -
£66971.74, 2010/11 - Nil
 3. How much was spent training police officers to use and handle the
guns?  Response :  Central Scotland Police can advise that it is
almost impossible to quantify the amount spent on training police
officers to use and handle guns.    There are several reasons for
this, for example there are national courses for some Officer training
in firearms skills, but they do so and then cascade training to other
AFO's in Force.  There are preparations, delivery and attendance,
equipment to deliver the function of training, including the firearms
and bullets, venue hire and vehicle costs.  These costs are
unquantifiable and not recorded in such a way that can be retrieved
for your request.
 4. Where did the money come from to fund the training of Police officers,
the supplying of ammunition and the supplying of guns? Was it from the
government grant/Council tax?  Response :  Central Scotland Police
Force do not split our core funding across particular expenditure
items.  Force budgets are created from a funding mix, mainly
comprising 51% from central government and 49% from constituent local
authorities.
 5. To which company's does Central Scotland Police pay when buying the
ammunition/guns etc?  Response : Ammunition : BAE Systems, Taser
International, GMK, Home Office. Weapons : AI, H&K, Helston Guns,
Taser International

questions should not be used for comparison purposes with any other

Dear Freedom Of Information,
Thanks for confirming the Home Office is a Company.

I was also wondering if there was an update on my other questions, by that i mean will you have the answers in the next week or so?

Sorry if I seem a little pushy, but there is a lot going on with Councils etc, and all the talk of cut backs which will include the police force (something I disagree with) has got me enquiring about things.

Thanks for your help so far.

Yours sincerely,

brian ovens
