Dear Office for National Statistics,

Please pass this on to the person who conducts Freedom of Information reviews.

I am writing to request an internal review of Office for National Statistics's handling of my FOI request 'Gulf War 1 (1991) Veterans'.

It is stated that it is not possible to access find out whether the people in the stud were veterans. I find this hard to believe and very suspicious to say the least.

A full history of my FOI request and all correspondence is available on the Internet at this address: https://www.whatdotheyknow.com/request/g...

Yours faithfully,

Julian Pope

FOI Team, Office for National Statistics

Dear Mr Pope,

Further to your email requesting an internal review of a recent FOI request – FOI 4450, I am sorry to hear that you are unhappy with your request. Please find our response below.

You requested information pertaining to the number of Gulf War veterans who have died from issues related to pituitary disorders.

We responded stating that we do not hold the information you require because whether the deceased was a war veteran or not, is not supplied on a death certificate. We did however, provide you with as much information as possible on the number of deaths related to pituitary disorders.

This information was provided to you within the 20 working day limit as set out within the Freedom of Information Act 2000 and no information was withheld from you as per any of the exemptions set out under said legislation. Furthermore, in consideration of the timely and detailed response provided, I feel that it is fair to conclude that reasonable advice and assistance was provided in this instance in line with our duties outlined under s.16 of the Act.

I suggest that you are not necessarily unhappy with our processing of your request or the way it was handled, but rather the fact that we are unable to provide you with data we do not hold. That being the case, an internal review is not appropriate.

If you believe that we have not fulfilled our obligations under the Freedom of Information Act then you have the right to contact the Information Commissioner’s Office at:

Information Commissioner’s Office
Wycliffe House
Water Ln
Wilmslow
