Simon Baker, Nursing and Midwifery Council

Ref no: FOI/2018/193

18^th June 2018

Dear J Roberts,

Freedom of Information Request

Thank you for your request for information from the Nursing and Midwifery
Council (NMC). Your request was received on 18^th May 2018 and dealt with
under the terms of the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (FOI Act).

You have asked for the following information:

‘‘The following is taken from the recently published 'Lessons
Learned Review' by the Professional Standards Authority:

'5.42 We understand that the NMC accepts that setting Google Alerts on Mr
A was taking its monitoring of him too far.  It told us that guidance has
been issued to its communications team.'

Please provide a copy of the guidance.’

 Response

Guidance was issued to directors and ADs by the AD Communications by
email.

Please see below a copy of the guidance provided in the email below:

‘Dear All

As you know, the communications team carry out daily media and
parliamentary monitoring of a range of issues relevant to the
organisation. We also produce a daily media bulletin and a weekly
parliamentary bulletin. If you don’t currently receive these bulletins,
and you would like to, please do just let me know.

Because we have a corporate monitoring service that we specify search
terms for, please could you make sure that your team members are not
setting up their own alerts – such as Google alerts – for people or issues
relevant to their work at the NMC; this would include alerts relating to
any individual who may be involved in an FtP case such as a witness or a
referrer. The media and parliamentary teams are very happy to help
colleagues who are searching for a particular piece of media coverage or a
parliamentary mention.

Please can I ask that you communicate this to all your team members as
soon as possible.’

End of Response.

Thank you

Yours sincerely,

Simon Baker
