Groundwater flooding

The request was successful.

Dear Environment Agency,

My parents have lived in the same property for 40 years and have never had a problem with flooding until the last 15 years where they have been flooded about four times. The water appears to come in from underground when we have a substantial amount of rain. They used to have fields above them but now houses have been built there. We feel that because the fields have now gone the water can’t be soaked up and as a result is allowed to accumulate. My parents are in their 70s and as you can imagine very distressing for them. I was wondering if you could plead give me advice on who would be responsible for this happening time and again. It just doesn’t seem fair that they have to endure this each time we have heavy rainfall. I know our theory about taking away the fields would be hard to prove but I can’t think of any other reason why they are now susceptible to flooding. Your advice on this matter would be greatly received
Thank you

Yours faithfully,
Mrs Debra Deller

Dear Debra,

Groundwater flooding and the management of local flood risk would fall
under the Lead Local Flood Authority. This could be your Local Authority
or the Internal Drainage Board.

If you are not sure where the water is coming from, you may need to
contact a specialist drainage consultant or engineer to inspect the
property to find out. Details of local specialist drainage consultants and
engineers can be found online or in a local directory like Yellow Pages.

We have produced some guidance to help homeowners affected by groundwater
flooding. It is available on GOV.UK:

[1]https://www.gov.uk/government/publicatio...

We have also introduced a new groundwater flood warning service. This is
only available in the following regions:

·         Herts and North London

·         West Thames

·         Solent and South Downs

·         Wessex

If you are in one of the above regions, and would like to sign up for
groundwater flood warning, you can sign up for free by calling Floodline
on 03459 881 188, or visiting GOV.UK and registering online on our Flood
Warnings System:

Be prepared for encounters with the disingenuous types and those with sloping shoulders. It’s politics before people quite often. Good luck.
