commercial and industrial sources within your authority area?
3. What proportion of green and/or food waste from domestic and
municipal sources is segregated at source and collected by the

Dear Mr Wadrop
Further to your request for information under the Freedom of Information
Act 2000 please see my response below.
1. What are the estimated green and/or food waste arisings from domestic
and municipal sources within your authority area? Green waste tonnages
collected in 2010/2011 consisted of a total of 13,124 tonnes which
comprised of 11,632 tonnes kerbside, 1,454 tonnes from the Household Waste
Reception and Recycling Centre and depots and 38 tonnes at the
Crematorium. Food waste is not collected separately at the current time.
2. What are the estimated green and/or food waste arisings from commercial
and industrial sources within your authority area? We do not offer a green
or food waste collection service for commercial or industrial sources and
we have no mechanism to obtain or collate this data.
3. What proportion of green and/or food waste from domestic and municipal
sources is segregated at source and collected by the local authority. See
1 above relating to kerbside.
4. Where is the segregated green and food waste currently disposed? The
green waste is delivered to JBT Ltd who bulk the material up and transport
it to Comverte in Northumberland for processing.
5. How much does the authority currently pay to dispose of green and/or
food waste that has been segregated (average price per tonne)? The gate
fee for green waste is currently £25.75 per tonne.
6. How much does the authority currently pay to dispose of mixed waste
that has been not been segregated (average price per tonne)? The gate fee
for household waste is £12.00 plus a landfill tax rate of £58.00 per
tonne.
7. Where is the mixed non-segregated waste currently disposed? The mixed
non segregated waste goes to Alex Smiles and the majority is disposed of
to Cowpen Bewley Landfill Site.
8. Please provide a breakdown of road transport fuel used by the authority
(e.g. type of fuel (petrol/diesel) and in which application (e.g. buses,
police, ambulance, authority vehicles). The Authorities usage in Authority
vehicles is detailed in the response to question 9 below. It should be
noted the Local Authority are not responsible for the buses, police or
ambulance service infrastructure and therefore we have no information
covering their usage.
9. What has been the authorities annual spend on road transport fuels over
the past 3 years (if possible could this be split into Diesel /Petrol/LPG,
if there is any other fuel please specify)?
Year Diesel Unleaded Gas Other (not through TOTAL
council fuel system)
£ £ £ £ £
2008/09 1,582,977 41,477 103,591 74,107 1,802,152
2009/10 1,451,055 37,460 77,715 83,589 1,649,820
2010/11 1,617,957 38,821 86,453 78,233 1,821,464
10. Has there been any positive action on behalf of the authority to
maximise renewable fuel inclusion in the road transport fuel consumed in
the last 3 years? If Yes, what was it? There have
been no bio diesel initiatives implemented to date however the positive
action the authority has been involved in during the last 3 years
includes :-
* Switch EV - The Ultra Low Carbon Vehicle Demonstrator Project.
* Purchase of 2 Nissan Leaf vehicles.
* Low Carbon Bus Service - This is in conjunction with Sunderland
University and Nexus
* Plugged in Places - Charging Point infrastructure
There is also a current review on Low carbon vehicles which is focusing
on the following:-
* The transport fleet the council owns and operates.
* The transport fleet the council procures from other organizations.
* Third party operators working on the councils behalf.
* Business travel / private vehicles.
I hope you find this helpful.
