GREATER MANCHESTER REGION- canal deaths
stephen marvin made this Freedom of Information request to Manchester (CIty) Coroners Service
This authority is not subject to FOI law, so is not legally obliged to respond (details).
This request has been closed to new correspondence from the public body. Contact us if you think it ought be re-opened.
Dear The Manchester Coroners,
Could you please provide the total number of bodies retrieved from the canal system in the Greater Manchester area since 2004. Also, is it possible to have a timeline and names of all found dead in the canals no matter what circumstances it was?
Dear Mr Marvin
The requests you have made are not subject to the Freedom of Information
Act, since the Coroner is an independent judicial officer, this changes
the way in which the law applies. First, the coroner is not a “public
authority” within the meaning of the FOIA 2000 (see Section 3 (1) and
Schedule 1, where coroners, like other judges, are not listed).
That said, the Coroner will always consider applications for disclosure on
their independent merit, as such can you explain the reason for this
request and the proposed use of the information.
