The request was successful.

Dear Department for Education

I should be grateful if you could let me know the total amount of 'exceptional' grants given to academy trusts to stabilise their finances in financial year 2017/18. I should also be grateful if you could supply me with a breakdown giving the names of academy trusts receiving such a grant and the amount.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours faithfully

J Downs

Dear Department for Education,

Please pass this on to the person who conducts Freedom of Information reviews.

I am writing to request an internal review of Department for Education's handling of my FOI request 'Grants to academies to stabilise their finances in financial year 2017/18'.

The reasons given for exemption is that it would prejudice ESFA's work when negotiating with academy trusts on complex financial matters.

I did not ask to be given details of ongoing discussions. I asked for the total amount of grants, names of trusts receiving grants and the value of grants already awarded. These would not be known until after negotiations had completed. It's difficult to understand how negotiations can be prejudiced when they are over.

I should be grateful if you would review the DfE's handling of my request and its refusal to disclose using S36(2)(c) of the Freedom of Information Act.

A full history of my FOI request and all correspondence is available on the Internet at this address: https://www.whatdotheyknow.com/request/g...

Yours faithfully

J Downs

Dear ACCOUNT, Unmonitored,

Further to my request for an Internal Review on the handling of my request for Grants to academies to stabilise their finances in financial year 2017/18, I have since received a response to a similar request for Grants to academies to stabilise their finances in financial year 2016/17. The information I requested was given in full - full amount with names of trusts and amount they each received.

There is, therefore, no valid reason to refuse to release the same information for 2017/18.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours sincerely,

J Downs
