GP registration data in relation to 2016 Abortion Stats

Department of Health and Social Care did not have the information requested.

Dear Department of Health,

Under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 I am seeking further information in relation to the number of legal abortions performed in England and Wales in 2016. I am aware the Department for Health has published their data on abortion statistics in England and Wales for 2016 and would like further data on the following points.

1) Can you confirm if the figure for the number of resident abortions in England and Wales 2016 (185596, Table 2 in data set) is the total number of abortion procedures or the total number of residents who have had an abortion (1 or more).

2) Having qualified this, how many residents who had an NHS funded abortions in England and Wales in 2016 were registered with a GP.

3) How many of these GP registered residents had an abortion in an NHS hospital and how many had an abortion in an NHS funded private clinic.

4) I request access to the contracts between each CCG/Local Office and any private abortion provider contracted to provide NHS funded abortions.

5) I request details of the contracts between the 31 NHS local offices in London and the private abortion providers contracted to provide NHS funded abortions in each local office.

Some parts of this request may be easier to answer than others, and should this prove to be the case I would ask that you release available data as soon as possible rather than hold up the entire request.

I would prefer to receive this information electronically. If the decision is made to withhold some of this data using exemptions in Act, please inform me of that fact and cite the exemptions used.

If you need any clarification then please contact me at the email listed. Under your section 16 duty to provide advice and assistance I would expect you to contact me if you find this request unmanageable in any way before the twentieth working day.

I would be grateful if you could confirm in writing that you have received this request, and I look forward to hearing from you in the near future.

Yours faithfully,

Joss Evans
