GMC's preparation for complaints
Dear General Medical Council,
The registration of Physician Associates and Anaesthesia Associates by GMC will involve your organisation in vast numbers of investigations into professional standards, unethical behaviours, fitness to practice and legality of scope. To date there has been no outlet for these concerns.
How is GMC preparing for this logjam of complaints and subsequent investigations?
Will GMC accept complaints relating to incidents/failures which occurred prior to registration?
Yours faithfully,
Susan Sollazzi

We work with doctors, patients, and other stakeholders to support good,
safe patient care across the UK. We set the standards doctors and those
who train them need to meet, and help them achieve them. If there are
concerns these standards may not be met or that public confidence in
doctors may be at risk, we can investigate, and take action if needed.

Dear Ms Sollazzi,
Your information request – IR1-4515515215
Thank you for your email dated 21 July 2024. I have considered your
request under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (FOIA).
I have answered your questions as below:
1. How is GMC preparing for this logjam of complaints and subsequent
investigations?
In preparation for the regulation of PAs and AAs, we have identified and
secured the resource that will be needed to progress concerns about PAs
and AAs based on the number of PAs and AAs and when they are likely to
join our register, and have a training plan in place for colleagues, which
we will deliver later this year.
2. Will GMC accept complaints relating to incidents/failures which
occurred prior to registration?
Historic fitness to practise issues will be within our regulatory scope.
We will be able to consider these and take action if we judge that they
impact on the associate’s current fitness to practise and meet our
threshold for investigation.
Who to contact
If you would like to appeal my response, please set out your reasons in
writing to [1][GMC request email]. Please note that we will only usually
consider appeals received within 40 working days of our response. You can
also appeal to the [2]Information Commissioner, the regulator of the FOIA
