Five-yearly assessment
Doctors without a connection to a responsible officer or suitable person revalidate through a process of annual appraisals based on Good medical practice, annual returns submitted to us and a five-yearly assessment. We make a revalidation decision based on the outcomes of these activities.
Thank you for getting in touch. Please note this is an automated email.
We’ll get back to you as soon as we can with a further acknowledgement.
You’ll usually hear from us on the next working day, but it might take a
little longer during busy periods.
In the meantime, if you want any further information about the GMC, please
visit our website.
Thank you

Performance Assessments
For detailed information about our performance assessment procedure, I
would direct you to our [1]website, which you will hopefully find useful.
The table below summarises the performance assessments of doctors that
were completed in 2008-2017. A total of 550 assessments took place in
that period. It may be helpful to explain the terminology we use for the
outcome of assessments. Rather than ‘pass’ or ‘fail’, we categorise the
outcome by the assessor’s opinion that the doctor is either fit to
practise, fit to practise on a limited basis, or not fit to practise. It
should also be noted that doctors may undertake multiple assessments, and
therefore the figures below represent the number of assessments rather
than the number of doctors.
We can’t provide information relating to doctors who have undertaken a
‘knowledge test or peer review’. These are elements of an overall
performance assessment, rather than a specific type of performance
assessment in themselves. Usually a doctor will undertake all elements of
a performance review however if adjustments were made in particular cases
this would only be recorded within the case documents, not in a searchable
way on our case management system.

Revalidation Assessments
The revalidation assessment process was introduced in mid-2016 and
therefore we only have a full calendar year’s data for 2017. In 2017, 55
doctors took the revalidation assessment, and 36 of these met the standard
(65%).
I hope you will find this useful. Please let me know if you have any
queries or require anything further.
Yours sincerely
