GIM consultant querry

We're waiting for omtatsatdutta to read recent responses and update the status.

Dear General Medical Council,

1. I would like to know that can a General Internal Medicine Consultant in UK having had experience in the field of Elderly Medicine and General Medicine can start working as a qualified Geriatrician without being on register of geriatric medicine ?

I know that there is special exam and curriculum in UK to be followed to become a Geriatrician.
But my friends in India who have MD degree (general Medicine) after their
MBBS work like geriatrician.

2. Can you also tell me from the above context that can a General Internal Medicine Consultant with lots of experience in Elderly care in UK, Can he/she put designation and qualification as Consultant Geriatrician in clinical letters for patients and GPs while clinically managing them and act as a Geriatrician in UK even though he/she not on a specialist register for geriatric ?

Thanks

Yours faithfully,
Dutta

Matthew McCoig-Lees (0161 923 6579), General Medical Council

Dear Dutta

Thank you for your email. I am responding under the Freedom of Information
Act 2000 (FOIA.)

Before providing a formal response I think it would be helpful for me to
set out what the FOIA obligates us to do.

Firstly we have to confirm if any information is held and secondly either
provide it or apply an exemption by way of explanation as to why we are
not providing it.

More importantly for the purposes of your request, we are not obliged to
create information to respond to a request. We only have to provide a
response with the information which has already been created prior to the
request. This of course means that theoretical questions like the ones you
asked are unlikely to have any information recorded about it. I confirm
that is the case in relation to your request.

Our formal response is therefore that there is no information held.

My advice to you is to contact the GMC contact centre on 0161 923 6602 or
email [1][email address].

I’m sorry we cannot be of more assistance.

Kind Regards

Matt
