GE2019 postal vote data

The request was successful.

Dear West Suffolk Council,

I would like to make an FOI request for voter data from the 12th December 2019 General Election. Specifically, I would like the following info:

- how many people were registered to vote by post in your constituency?
- how many postal votes were received?
- how many votes were marked as invalid?
- what was the result of the postal vote by party? If easier, just including the top 3 parties is fine.

I look forward to your reply.

Yours faithfully,

Donovan Kiddick

Dear Mr Kiddick

I refer to your request for information dated the 31 December
2019.

Request:

Dear West Suffolk Council,

I would like to make an FOI request for voter data from the 12th December
2019 General Election. Specifically, I would like the following info:

- how many people were registered to vote by post in your constituency?

- how many postal votes were received?

- how many votes were marked as invalid?

- what was the result of the postal vote by party? If easier, just
including the top 3 parties is fine.

I look forward to your reply.

Yours faithfully,

Donovan Kiddick

Response:

West Suffolk Council was responsible for the management of two
parliamentary constituencies at the recent UK Parliamentary election on
Thursday 12 December 2019. West Suffolk constituency is wholly within the
West Suffolk Council area, whilst the Bury St Edmunds constituency
comprises part of the West Suffolk Council area and part Mid Suffolk
Council but the West Suffolk elections team was responsible for its
administration.

The below table provides the relevant figures for each constituency.

+------------------------------------------------------------------------+
|Question |West Suffolk|Bury St Edmunds constituency |
| |constituency| |
|----------------------+------------+------------------------------------|
|How many people were | 12,736 | 15,764 |
|registered to vote by | | |
|post in your | | (comprising 7704 from the West |
|constituency | |Suffolk Council administrative area |
| | | and 8060 from the Mid Suffolk |
| | | Council administrative area) |
|----------------------+------------+------------------------------------|
|How many postal voters| 10,083 | 13,030 |
|were received? | | |
|----------------------+------------+------------------------------------|
|How many votes were | 204 | 261 |
|marked as invalid? | | |
+------------------------------------------------------------------------+

All postal voting packs are sent out with a ‘postal voting statement’
which asks electors to give their date of birth and signature. For all the
postal packs that we receive back, these identifiers on the postal voting
statements are checked against the date of birth and signature provided on
the electors original application so as to ensure that the correct person
has filled out their postal vote and to protect against electoral fraud.
The figures included in response to question number three relating to the
number marked as invalid represent the number in which either the date of
birth or signature failed to match the electors original application and
therefore were rejected.

Unfortunately, your final question regarding the results of the postal
vote are impossible for us to answer because postal ballot papers are, in
accordance with the legislation, mixed with polling station ballot papers
at the count and as a result we do not have a result for postal voters
only.
