GCSEs and UCAT
Dear King's College London,
I would like to request if I could obtain information on the selection process,
How many applicants with below 5A*s at GCSE are offered an interview and for those applicants what were there UCATs?
Could I also request whether UCAT is used post interview ?
Yours faithfully, Uzair
Please note that due to resources being directed to dealing with the
impact of Covid-19 on the university community, there might be a delay
with completing your request.
Thank you for your patience.

Dear Information Compliance,
im aware that applicants are also scored on their contextual data, so did those applicants also have contextual data ,
Also may I ask what percentage an applicant needed to score in your selection process to obtain an interview for 2020 entry?
Yours sincerely,
Uzair Sarfaraz
Dear Uzair,
None of the 112 applicants interviewed that sat GCSE exams but were awarded less than 5 A*s were awarded additional widening participation points.
There is no set score required to be offered an interview since applicants are ranked relevant to that specific cohort and the top performers invited. In the 2020 cycle the lowest score invited to interview was 47.4 out of a possible 150.

Dear Information Compliance,
So how exactly does the scoring system work?
It’s out of 150 instead of 100?
Would a 3220 Band 1 UCAT score full marks for the UCAT part of the selection proces,
Eg 75/75
Yours sincerely,
Uzair Sarfaraz
Dear Information Compliance,
May I ask for the exact scoring system,
Or could I have it calculated for me?
Yours sincerely,
Uzair Sarfaraz
Dear Uzair,
Can you clarify what you want calculated.

Dear Information Compliance,
Could I just ask the scoring system?
Eg using GCSES, UCAT
How many GCSES give x point
Yours sincerely,
Uzair Sarfaraz
Dear Uzair
The following ranking method was used for the 2020 application cycle but is subject to change for the current and future cycles. In the 2020 application cycle, A100 applicants were ranked using a points system and then the best achievers invited to interview. Applications which met the entry requirements were ranked according to their UCAT score (average score and SJT band) compared to other applicants, with improvement given for GCSE results (number of A*s) and school performance, with additional points available for those considered a Widening Participation (WP) applicant.
UCAT scores were ranked using a percentile system against the cohort of applicants, with the highest UCAT score getting 100 points for being in the 100th percentile. An additional 10 points are awarded for achieving Band 1 in SJT and 5 points for achieving Band 2. A maximum of 40 points were available for GCSE performance. GCSE points were awarded according to the number of A*s achieved at GCSE (subject is not considered). Less than 5 scored 0, 5 scored 10, 6 scored 20, 7 scored 30, 8+ scored 40. Scores were adjusted according relevant to the quintile GCSE attainment of the school. If the school performance was one of the lowest two quintiles then we also counted A grades achieved at GCSE towards the A* count mentioned above. For schools in the 3rd quintile, each A grade is considered equivalent to 0.5 of an A*. For schools in the top two quintiles, no adjustment is made.
As such, 150 was the maximum total points, excluding WP points. An extra 20 WP points were added if the applicant was listed as a Care Leaver, or an additional 5 WP points for having a POLAR/ACORN flag. There is no set score required to be offered an interview since applicants are ranked relevant to that specific cohort and the top performers invited. In the 2020 cycle the lowest score invited to interview was 47.4 out of a possible 150.
Kind regards
Jade
