GCSE scores of applicants who received predicted grades
Dear Cardiff University,
I would like to request information under the freedom of information act regarding the processing of applications in the 2021 cycle.
1) Will applicants who have actually sat their GCSE's to achieve grades be looked at any differently or favoured to applicants who received their teachers predicted grades in 2020, due to the covid-19 lockdown?
2) what was the average GCSE score, out of 27, for applicants who gained interviews in the 2017, 2018, and 2019 cycles?
Yours faithfully,
Libby Mason

Dear Libby,
I am writing in response to your Freedom of Information request dated 28
November 2020.
For ease of reference, I have reproduced your questions below and set out
our corresponding responses.
I would like to request information under the freedom of information act
regarding the processing of applications in the 2021 cycle.
1) Will applicants who have actually sat their GCSE's to achieve grades be
looked at any differently or favoured to applicants who received their
teachers predicted grades in 2020, due to the covid-19 lockdown?
The School of Medicine aims to admit students with the qualities,
abilities and attributes that can benefit from our medical programme and
“to attract, train and retain the best students and staff, producing
graduates who understand the needs of individuals and the community in
which they live”. This requires that the process of student selection is
objective, transparent, open, fair and free from discrimination of any
kind.
We aim to ensure equality of opportunity for all individuals whose
applications are considered in accordance with the Medical Schools Council
Statement on the core values and attributes needed to study medicine.
https://www.medschools.ac.uk/media/2542/...
2) what was the average GCSE score, out of 27, for applicants who gained
interviews in the 2017, 2018, and 2019 cycles?
Between 2017 and 2020 the cut off score has ranged between 20 - 27 for
students in the contextualised category and 23 -27 for standard
applicants.
As all applicants are now in categories (numerical grades, alphabetical
grades, alpha and numeric grades, overseas) we have a range of cut off
scores. The categories enable us to compare applicants to their peers as
they have all been in the same situation with regards to their grading
structure.
I trust this information satisfies your enquiry. The University has a
Freedom of Information Complaints Procedure should you feel dissatisfied
with this response or the way in which your request was handled.
Complaints must be made in writing and must set out why you believe the
University has not met its obligations under the Freedom of Information
Act. You may email your complaint to [1][email address] where it
will be forwarded to the Head of Compliance and Risk who will be
responsible for overseeing the review.
If you remain dissatisfied following the outcome of your complaint, you
have the right to apply directly to the Information Commissioner for
consideration. The Information Commissioner can be contacted at the
following address: Information Commissioner's Office, Wycliffe House,
Water Lane, Wilmslow, Cheshire, SK9 5AF.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your interest in
Cardiff University. If you require further assistance please feel free to
contact me.
