GCSE Scores of Applicants for the past 3 years

Matthew Elliott made this Freedom of Information request to University of Oxford

Automatic anti-spam measures are in place for this older request. Please let us know if a further response is expected or if you are having trouble responding.

Response to this request is long overdue. By law, under all circumstances, University of Oxford should have responded by now (details). You can complain by requesting an internal review.

Dear University of Oxford,

Please release a breakdown of the average GCSE score of applicants for the past three admissions cycles. Please break these down by subject, shortlisting, offer, and matriculation status.

Yours faithfully,

Matthew Elliott

FOI, University of Oxford

Dear Matthew Elliott,

To ensure we provide the correct information, I would be grateful if you could clarify the following:

What is your understanding of a GCSE score? Is this the number of A* grades achieved? What would the score be for someone who got 3A*s, 2As and 4 Bs?

If we do not receive a response within two months, we shall regard the request as closed.

Yours sincerely,

Information Compliance Team

Dear FOI,

My understanding is that GCSEs are now scored on a 1-9 basis, so the sum all all scores for each applicant would be sufficient. For example, a student taking 10 GCSEs, scoring 9 in each would accrue a score of 90. Information on how many GCSEs taken, and the sum score across those for each would be ideal.

Alternatively, an aggregate would also be fine. For example, the average applicant for subject x had the sum score of 87 across 10 GCSEs, the average interviewee for that subject 88, and offer holder 89 and &c across the range of subjects.

Yours sincerely,

Matthew Elliott

FOI, University of Oxford

Dear Matthew Elliott,

GCSE grades are currently recorded as a mixture of old (A*-G) and new (9-1) grades.

The example below shows 6x A* grades or grades 9 or 8, plus 3x A grades or grade 7, plus 1x B grade or grade 6
6[9/8/A*]-3[7/A]-1[6/B]

We are therefore unable to provide data as you have specified in your request.

Alternatively, we can provide:
• Individual Applicant results (in the format above, i.e. ‘6[9/8/A*]-3[7/A]-1[6/B]’)
• The total number of GCSEs (where an applicant has achieved 6 or more GCSEs).
• The number of A*s at GCSE (where an applicant has achieved 6 or more GCSEs).

Once we receive clarification, we will proceed with processing your request.

Yours sincerely,

Dear FOI,

I'm still waiting for a response on this. Data along the lines of those provided by Cambridge, linked below, would be satisfactory. If they could also be provided in .xlsx rather than .pdf also.

Yours sincerely,

Matthew Elliott

Dear FOI,

Unfortunately the format you have provided this data in - 60,000 points - is unusable. If you could please resupply in the same aggregated form used by Cambridge in response to the same request

Dear FOI,

Not a problem. Please advise when the aggregated GCSE data will be available in the specified format.

Matthew Elliott

Dear FOI,

Still waiting on this. Have had excellent admissions test data back this week, so grateful for that as well.

Yours sincerely,

Matthew Elliott

Matthew Elliott

Dear FOI,

Is there any hope of getting hold of these? I have been using the Cambridge equivalent data in lieu for my work to date - are there any substantial differences that would make these a bad proxy. Obviously would still very much prefer the full data, but if there is no meaningful difference from the Cambridge, that would work fine for my purposes.

Yours sincerely,

Matthew Elliott

Dear FOI,

Following up again on this, please see earlier messages in this thread.
