Gambling problems
Dear Cardiff University,
Please can you tell me how many students - in the past three years - your university has:
i) treated for depression/anxiety caused by gambling addiction;
ii) financial problems encountered because of gambling debts.
Thank you.
Yours faithfully,
John Cairns

Dear John
I am writing in response to your Freedom of Information request dated
24^th June 2019 in which you requested information regarding students with
gambling problems.
For ease of reference, I have reproduced your questions below and set out
our corresponding responses.
Please can you tell me how many students - in the past three years - your
university has:
i) treated for depression/anxiety caused by gambling addiction;
The University does not record data on depression or anxiety caused by
gambling addiction. On the attached document, detailing the University’s
provision of Student Wellbeing and Support Services, you will note that
there is a presenting issue of “addictive behaviour”, but it is not
advised this figure is used as it is not comparative and includes other
addictive behaviours.
ii) financial problems encountered because of gambling debts.

For academic year 2018/19 incidences of gambling have been recorded as
“topical/emerging issues” by our hardship fund assessors as part of a
wider piece of work to spot trends in reasons for applications. There may
be some inconsistencies in how this has been recorded by different
assessors. Therefore, the number above may not be an accurate reflection
of the number of students who have experienced financial issues as a
result of gambling debts. Our Hardship fund is now an online application,
with the ability for us to record and extrapolate data of this nature more
easily for future academic years.
I trust this information satisfies your enquiry. The University has a
Freedom of Information Complaints Procedure should you feel dissatisfied
with this response or the way in which your request was handled.
Complaints must be made in writing and must set out why you believe the
University has not met its obligations under the Freedom of Information
Act. You may email your complaint to [1][email address] where
it will be forwarded to the Director of Strategic Planning and Governance
who will be responsible for overseeing the review.
If you remain dissatisfied following the outcome of your complaint, you
have the right to apply directly to the Information Commissioner for
consideration. The Information Commissioner can be contacted at the
following address: Information Commissioner's Office, Wycliffe House,
Water Lane, Wilmslow, Cheshire, SK9 5AF.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your interest in
Cardiff University. If you require further assistance please feel free to
contact me.
Yours sincerely
