G100 Admissions Information

The request was partially successful.

Dear Lucy Cavendish College, Cambridge,

I would like to request the following information for the G100 Mathematics/Maths with Physics course, for the application cycles of 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, and 2021 (To clarify, 2021 application cycle would refer to applicants applying in 2020 for entry in 2021 or deferred entry in 2022):

1. The total number of conditional offer holders (applicants who had received an offer for G100 at Lucy Cavendish and had STEP as a condition of their offer) who took STEP.
2. The number of conditional offer holders (as defined above) who met the STEP condition of their offer.
3. The number of conditional offer holders (as defined above) who missed their STEP condition but were still admitted to Lucy Cavendish, or another college, for G100.
4. The number, if any, of students who were admitted to Lucy Cavendish for G100 through the August Reconsideration Pool.

Yours faithfully,

Dear Lucy Cavendish College, Cambridge,

Please pass this on to the person who conducts Freedom of Information reviews.

I am writing to request an internal review of Lucy Cavendish College, Cambridge's handling of my FOI request 'G100 Admissions Information'.

The response I received noted that my request was refused because the information I requested is not held by Lucy Cavendish - because the college does not keep information on unsuccessful applicants.

However, my requests do not pertain to unsuccessful applicants.

I note as well that the request was also refused on the basis that the numbers are sufficiently small. This contradicts the first reason given - the information is either not held, or it is held and you know that the numbers are sufficiently small.

If you do hold the information, please could it be released as originally requested? If the numbers are sufficiently small, please could you provide the information in the form of ranges (e.g. 1-5, or <5) to prevent identification.

A full history of my FOI request and all correspondence is available on the Internet at this address: https://www.whatdotheyknow.com/request/g...

Yours faithfully,

Ms L. Tan

Dear Ms Tan

Our ref: F2022-018 G100 Admissions Information

Further to your request for an internal review of our response, I am
setting out below the results of the internal review:

Internal Review of Freedom of Information Request from Ms L Tan

I have carried out a review of the information provided in response to the
Freedom of Information request from Ms L Tan received on 11 August 2022 as
follows:

I would like to request the following information for the G100
Mathematics/Maths with Physics course, for the application cycles of 2017,
2018, 2019, 2020, and 2021 (To clarify, 2021 application cycle would refer
to applicants applying in 2020 for entry in 2021 or deferred entry in
2022):

1. The total number of conditional offer holders (applicants who had
received an offer for G100 at Lucy Cavendish and had STEP as a condition
of their offer) who took STEP.
2. The number of conditional offer holders (as defined above) who met the
STEP condition of their offer.
3. The number of conditional offer holders (as defined above) who missed
their STEP condition but were still admitted to Lucy Cavendish, or another
college, for G100.
4. The number, if any, of students who were admitted to Lucy Cavendish for
G100 through the August Reconsideration Pool.

The answer provided was:

For the application cycles of 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, and 2021 (To
clarify, 2021 application cycle would refer to applicants applying in 2020
for entry in 2021 or deferred entry in 2022):

We do not keep information about unsuccessful applicants after the round
is complete, so this request is refused on the grounds that we do not hold
the data requested.

This request is also declined on the grounds that the numbers are
sufficiently small that it would risk identifying students, so is exempt
from

disclosure under Section 40(2) of the Freedom of Information Act.

For information, undergraduate admission statistics are available on the
University Website at:

[1]https://www.undergraduate.study.cam.ac.u...

If you are unhappy with the service you have received in relation to your
request and wish to make a complaint, you should write to me, at the
address below.

I have reviewed the information held and provided by the College and
established the following:

The FOI request referred to ‘conditional offer-holders’, defined by the
request as ‘applicants who had received an offer for G100 at Lucy
Cavendish and had STEP as a condition of their offer’.  As we specified in
the original response, we delete all data about ‘unsuccessful applicants’
after the round is complete, so cannot confirm how many offer-holders
overall took STEP so I confirm that the College could not answer the first
question, which asks for the total number.

And, in respect of questions 2, 3 and 4, our numbers are so small that
there is a risk of identifying individual students - hence the second
reason given for declining the original request. If it is helpful to Ms
Tan I can confirm that in all cases the answer to these questions is <5.

I therefore conclude that the College replied appropriately to this FOI
request.
