Dear Mr Bradley

RSN22408

Thank you for your recent request made under the Freedom of Information
Act.

The Spherical Tokamak for Energy Production (STEP) programme is being
supported by the Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy
(BEIS) and managed by the UK Atomic Energy Agency (UKAEA).

The Combined Authority did not put forward a potential location in the
City Region as no suitable site was identified that met the UKAEA’s
criteria.

Critical selection criteria including required land type and volume and
power grid connectivity capacity meant that the City Region did not move
beyond an initial, desktop assessment. No further discussions took place,
meaning that we do not hold any minutes to provide to you. The vast
majority of the long list of potential sites released last week are at
existing nuclear facilities or recently decommissioned coal-fired power
stations. This indicates the type of location that the UKAEA and BEIS were
looking to consider.

Our natural location and industrial base means we are focused on fully
developing our tidal, offshore wind and hydrogen potential to generate
clean energy as part of a balanced UK clean energy mix.

The City Region has expertise in aspects of nuclear technology
development, primarily centred around the University of Liverpool, STFC’s
Daresbury campus, the Office for Nuclear Regulation at Bootle and the
Nuclear AMRC at Cammell Laird. If nuclear fusion research and development
continues then these types of institutions will play an active part in the
sector.

I trust that this information is of interest to you.

Dear FOI CA,

Thank you for your prompt reply.

The industrial institutions you mention are primarily concerned with fission, there is surprisingly little overlap between that and fusion, other than fast neutrons.

However, SMRs that could be available sooner are fission based and the LCR should be looking at them, they would fit on an industrial estate.
